Close Combat Basics: Basic Strikes & Defences
About Lesson

Here’s an in-depth exploration of foundational hand-to-hand combat techniques used in military training, with a focus on punches, kicks, elbow and knee strikes, grappling and clinch work, joint locks and submissions, as well as escapes and counter-moves.

Basic Strikes and Defences

Punches

  1. Straight Punches:

    • Technique: The straight punch, or jab, is executed by extending the arm directly toward the target, ideally using the lead hand. The punch should be straight, with the shoulder moving forward slightly for additional power.
    • Application: Effective for keeping an opponent at bay, creating openings, or setting up combinations. In military contexts, it’s used to quickly incapacitate or disrupt an opponent.
    • Training Insight: Drills often focus on speed and precision, practicing on pads or with partners in controlled environments. Military training emphasizes combining punches with footwork for improved efficacy.
  2. Hooks:

    • Technique: The hook involves a semi-circular motion of the arm aimed at the opponent’s head or torso. The elbow is bent at a 90-degree angle, and the punch follows a horizontal arc.
    • Application: Useful in close quarters to target the side of the opponent’s head or body. Hooks are powerful and can be decisive in close combat.
    • Training Insight: Emphasis is placed on power generation through the rotational motion of the hips and shoulders. Sparring and bag work are common practices.
  3. Uppercuts:

    • Technique: An uppercut is delivered by driving the fist upward, usually targeting the opponent’s chin or jaw. The punch is generated by bending the knees slightly and driving the punch upward.
    • Application: Effective in close range, especially when the opponent’s guard is lowered. It can lift an opponent’s chin, leading to knockout opportunities.
    • Training Insight: Focus on explosive power and correct angle of impact. Drills include shadow boxing and focus mitt training.

With Every punching movement or drill make sure to prioritize footwork and hip movement behind every punching motion. This is a crucial and a very neglected aspect of the movement as isolated movements such as just moving the arm and the shoulder create problematic and underdeveloped function behind the movement. Its not a complex anatomical and biomechanical science, it just involves compound body motion to achieve a simple unified movement that is effective and economic.

Kicks

  1. Front Kicks:

    • Technique: Executed by lifting the knee and extending the leg forward, usually targeting the opponent’s midsection or groin. The kick is delivered with the ball of the foot or the heel.
    • Application: Good for maintaining distance, disrupting the opponent’s balance, or targeting vulnerable areas.
    • Training Insight: Emphasis on speed and precision. Practice includes bag work, and drills to ensure proper form and effective follow-through.
  2. Roundhouse Kicks:

    • Technique: Involves a swinging motion of the leg, striking with the shin or the instep. The kick is typically aimed at the opponent’s ribs, thigh, or head.
    • Application: Effective for powerful strikes and targeting larger areas of the opponent’s body. It can be used to break through defences or incapacitate.
    • Training Insight: Focus on rotational movement of the hips and proper technique to maximize power and reduce injury risk. Drills often include pad work and controlled sparring.
  3. Knee Strikes:

    • Technique: Executed by driving the knee upward towards the opponent’s body, typically targeting the midsection or head. The strike is powerful and involves using the whole body for force.
    • Application: Effective in close quarters for causing significant damage or creating openings for further attacks.
    • Training Insight: Practice involves conditioning the knees and integrating knee strikes with clinch work and other close-combat techniques.

Elbow and Knee Strikes

  1. Elbow Strikes:

    • Technique: Delivered by swinging the elbow horizontally or vertically to strike the opponent. Common targets include the head, jaw, or ribs.
    • Application: Elbow strikes are effective in close-quarters combat and are used to cause cuts or bruises, or to break an opponent’s guard.
    • Training Insight: Focus on precision and using the elbow as a blunt weapon. Drills include pad work and close-range sparring.
  2. Knee Strikes:

    • Technique: As mentioned above, knee strikes are powerful and used for close-quarters combat. They involve driving the knee into the opponent’s body.
    • Application: Effective for targeting the opponent’s midsection or head. Often used in clinch situations.
    • Training Insight: Training includes practicing knee strikes with different angles and integrating them into combinations with other techniques.

The whole idea of these movements is not just to achieve an end result, whether it be delivering damage in competitive sport or some fitness and health related workout. Rather it is for the individual´s profound understanding of the synergy and elegant motion of compound movement and the body working as one complete unit. To deliver a great attack we have to understand how it all builds up internally and in sequences by technique, timing, precision and grace.
